“Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts” exhibition at the Park Avenue Armory in New York, March 25, 2011
Let’s see in the New Year with some quilty inspiration. There are, as ever, a bevy of new babies to sew for, as well as one or two big family events, and while I’m still slightly in the Christmassy mood I think I might make a few more stockings. Then there’s the spinning, a burning urge to try fair isle knitting (absolutely loving Jared Flood’s Huron jumper), and that’s probably enough to keep me going for a whole lifetime!
Since seeing the two vintage red and white quilts at the Loch Lomond Quilt Show, this colour combination has been quietly playing around at the back of my mind. I still love the hexagon, but there’s something about the striking simplicity of red and white that seems at once modern and sophisticated as well as old and traditional. There was a red and white exhibition in New York some time ago, which must have been amazing. Here are one or two stunners.
