I’ve been working away at the ship quilt and seem to have got into a steady rhythm with it. I ordered some fancy threads, a metallic silver and variegated cotton, to spice up the otherwise quite plain fabrics.
The variegated thread is very enticing and mermaid-y, but the variations aren’t terribly easy to see unfortunately:
The silver turned out to be much thinner than expected and the metallic coating tends to fray with the repeated pulling of hand-sewing, so had to be doubled and used in very short lengths, which was frustrating! It looks very sparkly but irritated me far too much to persevere with. Back to the smooth Gutermann hand quilting thread which I love instead, and a bit of yellow, also Gutermann.
Not too long now!

It’s looking great. I know what you mean about the Gutermann silver thread – I tried embroidering with the gold version and from memory there was a lot of swearing involved! Not sure if it’s available where you are, but I’ve found a 100% rayon silver thread by Scansilk that I use to sew over silver rick rack and it works a treat in the sewing machine so would be fine for hand embroidering too.
Thanks for the recommendation, I like a bit of metallic thread on the Christmas decorations for my advent calendars but it is usually a pretty blasphemous affair, I agree!
Looks amazing ..such neat, tiny stitches!
It’s difficult to find experienced people about this subject, but you seem like you know what you’re talking about!
Thanks
