I just had to share this incredibly beautiful children’s book, recently given to my toddler son, with you. Written by Susan Marie Swanson and illustrated by Beth Krommes, The House in the Night is one of the most beautiful books I’ve come across in a long time.
Incredibly detailed (so we see something new every time), the poem builds up to a point and then climbs down again, repeating the phrases in reverse order as the little girl goes off to bed.
Illustrator Beth Krommes is new to me but I must say her work is fantastic- these illustrations are done with scratchboard, but she does woodcuts as well.
I am in particularly soppy pregnant lady mode at the moment (come ON, baby!) and especially love this woodcut she did as part of a series on motherhood:
Always nice to ‘discover’ new illustrators and new books that can become much-loved classics.
