It must be the unseasonable nip in the air -wind chill of 8 degrees today… it’s July for god’s sake- but thoughts at Home Farm Cottage are turning to winter preparations. When you have no central heating (yes, really) and you rely on the open fire so much, getting those branches and tree trunks sawn, chopped, stacked and seasoned is imperative. We had my sister and her boyfriend, a farmer, to stay over the weekend. Amongst the eating, baby holding and chatting, Oli and James managed to get a good chopping session in and work on the next holz hausen (literally ‘wood house’) has begun. No tiddler this time, we are going for the full size. Here’s the initial ring of logs and the branches that form the ‘floor’ inside it:
