The fourth and final swallow was finished last night, so now the little flock is complete!
It’s the banners next, which will have writing on them as well as embroidered flowers. I had intended to do just generic, daisy-like flowers, but heard a piece on Radio 4 the other day about the Victorian language of flowers. (I do love Radio 4, where you are listening to topical political debate one minute, a play about learning disability the next, followed by an in-depth interview with an anchovy farmer) In Victorian times, flowers could convey meaning, such as passionate love, which perhaps couldn’t be verbalised. So the flowers on the quilt will have baby- and love-related meanings. Trouble is, my floral knowledge is shamefully limited. But google image is my friend!
