Well according to Wikipedia, five years’ marriage should be celebrated by giving wood. I toyed with the idea of a nice woodcut print, but it the end we went all practical and romantic at the same time and bought an apple tree to train up the patio wall. (The problem now is if the bally thing dies or we kill it. Not very well-boding for the marriage!) It’s a Bramely Seedling, because we have an eater/cooker already (James Grieves) and you just can’t beat a Bramley for apple pies. Cakes. Puddings. I told Sol that this is the pudding tree. He seemed duly impressed. It’s on semi dwarf rootstock, so it won’t get too big or its roots start to come up the kitchen floorboards.
A large lump of granite blocked us from planting it right next to the wall, but I’m hoping it can still be encouraged up the wall and any shoots that head into the patio space pruned off. The Lonesome Twosome seem to like it.
